In 2015, Blue Orbit Technologies quoted a CCTV project for a higher secondary school in Palakkad. We did not get the work because another vendor came in cheaper.
Nine years later, in 2024, the same school called us because their CCTV system had become difficult to maintain. The problem was not just one failed camera or one faulty recorder. The whole installation had become a recurring support issue.
What we found on site
The existing system had six DVRs placed around the campus: two 32-channel D-Link DVRs and four 16-channel D-Link DVRs. The cameras were a mixed set of 1MP and 2MP analog models.
The bigger issue was the cabling. CAT6 cable had been used, but not in a structured way. Instead of proper point-to-point runs, there were branches from one cable to multiple cameras, hidden joints, and undocumented paths. Every new fault meant more guessing and more time on site.
The school was paying for repeated service visits, often around Rs. 800 or more each time, but the underlying design problem remained.
Why patching was not the right answer
When an installation has undocumented joints and scattered recorders, replacing one camera or one DVR may only hide the real problem for a short time. We explained that a patch repair would not give the school a dependable system.
Our recommendation was to rebuild the CCTV and network backbone properly, with structured cabling, centralized planning, better camera selection and clear handover documentation.
The proposed solution
The first plan included 125 IP cameras, two 64-channel NVRs, eight 8TB hard disks and approximately 1800 meters of structured cabling. The camera mix included 2MP models and selected 4MP cameras with 12mm and 8mm lenses where longer coverage or tighter viewing angles were required.
The original project value was Rs. 10,24,000. Work began in July 2024, and as the site requirement became clearer, the final scope grew to 157 cameras and three 64-channel NVRs. The final project value became Rs. 14,78,000.
The result
After handover, the school had a documented IP CCTV system and a cleaner network backbone instead of scattered DVRs and hidden cable joints. Since handover, the system has not produced the earlier pattern of repeated complaints.
The lesson is simple: a cheaper quote is not automatically a cheaper system. If the installation is weak, the customer pays later through complaint calls, downtime, poor visibility, missed recordings and repeated rework.
